Driver sentenced to death for killing female colleague       By Wahab Abdullah & Jane Echewodo LAGOS—A Lagos State High Court, sitting in Ikeja, yesterday, sentenced a school bus driver, Godwin Etute, to death by hanging for the murder of a co-employee, Tolulope Adisa, with a screwdriver. The 32-year-old convict and the late Adisa were both employees of Value Land Nursery and Primary School, located at 13, Lateef Lasisi Street, Egbe, Lagos. Etute committed the offence on January 27, 2012, at 6a.m., behind Aris Hotel, Egbe, Lagos, in the Ikeja Judicial Division. Having been found culpable of the crime through a confessional statement, Etute faced a one count charge of murder contrary to Section 211 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Seven-year-old Ngozi (pseudonym) is no longer a child. Her innocence has been stolen by her 41-year-old father, Emeka Igwe, who not only raped her, but got her addicted to masturbation. It was gathered that anytime Ngozi felt sexual urge and her father was not around to stimulate her, she would invite boys into her parents’ apartment in the Federal Housing Estate, Meiran, Ojokoro, Lagos State, to “play with her private parts”. PUNCH Metro  learnt that the victim’s mother first detected the act in January, 2015, and after reporting to policemen at the Ojokoro Police Division, the case was dismissed as a family matter. Landlord sets tenant’s son, 3, ablaze in Ogun

The police in Ogun have arrested a landlord, Joseph Olaleye, for allegedly setting his tenant’s three-year-old son, Abdullahi Razak, ablaze which led to the toddler’s death in the Owode area of the state. PUNCH Metro  learnt that 65-year-old Olaleye, who had a bungalow at Olowosatide Junction in the area, was reportedly cooking on Monday at about 12pm, when his stove caught fire. It was gathered that the landlord, in a bid to put out the fire, threw out the stove into the corridor, and the fire caught Abdullahi, who was said to be playing with other kids in the neighbourhood. Our correspondent gathered that the other tenants in the house heard the screams of the boy, and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he later died in the afternoon. Graduate, four others nabbed with N57m cocaine

A 28-year-old university graduate of Economics, Nonso Akubueze, has been arrested along with four other suspects by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for alleged drug trafficking. It was learnt that Akubueze and the other suspects – Simon Omoluonye, Obidike Onodyer, Friday Onyeabor and Emma Ifoh – were apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, with 11.5 kilogrammes of cocaine substances valued at N57m. PUNCH Metro  gathered that the suspects had smuggled the drug into the country from Brazil. Akubueze, who was found with 1.1kg of cocaine hidden in his luggage, said he had left Nigeria for Brazil with the hope of getting a good job but his expectation was dashed on getting there. He said, “I am a 2009 graduate of Economics but I have no job. I left Nigeria in search of job opportunities. My condition of living in Brazil was worse than when I was in Nigeria. A female student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Miss Oreoluwa Adedamola, has been arrested by the men of the Ogun State Anti-Robbery Squad, for being in possession of a locally-made gun. The 20-year-old lady, who claimed to be an OND 2 Mass Communication student, was arrested on August 29 at Ifo, around 11.45pm, while travelling in a mini-truck with one Sikiru Kelani. She was among the suspects paraded by the Ogun State police commissioner, Abdulmajid Ali, on Tuesday at the state command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta. However, while speaking with our correspondent, Oreoluwa, who wept profusely, said it was Kelani that hid the gun inside her bag without her knowledge. Lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife branch, have lamented that the assassins of their colleague, Dr. Deji Adejobi, are yet to be arrested. Adejobi, who was a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics, was reportedly trailed and shot dead by the assailants who invaded his residence close to the Tollgate area of Ile-Ife around 10pm on July 4. The lecturers, who spoke through their Chairman, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, regretted that five weeks after the assassination of Adejobi, they had no clue of who the culprits were. Aborisade, who described the incident as worrisome, insisted that the identity of the assassins was supposed to have been known by now. The ASUU chairman said, “We have waited with bated breath for some time now with the hope that those who murdered Adejobi would have been unmasked and made to face the full wrath of the law. Alleged rape: UNILAG committee links Baruwa to varsity’s DLI

There are indications that the four-man panel set up by the University of Lagos to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged rape of a candidate by one Dr. Akin Baruwa will submit its report on Wednesday. Sources privy to the panel’s report on Monday told our correspondent that one of the findings by the committee is that Baruwa, at the time of allegedly committing the crime, handled a course at the Distance Learning Institute at UNILAG. But because he was said not to be entitled to an office, the committee is said to have discovered that another lecturer gave him the office where the student was allegedly raped. The panel, headed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Tunde Babawale, was constituted about three weeks ago after authorities at the university first denied that Baruwa was on its staff list. Amoeba entered 14-year-old Michael Riley's nose while swimming in a lake north of Houston with his cross country team on August 13, AP reports. Michael Riley Jr.’s family says he developed a headache and became disoriented after the swimming. He was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (men-ingo-in-Sephalite-us). The amoeba entered his nasal passages and made its way into his brain. Riley’s cousin Jennifer Hohman said in a statement that he was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital and placed in a medically induced coma until tests proved he had lost all brain function and couldn’t breathe without support. The hospital disconnected the ventilator Sunday. Hohman confirmed that he died. Michael competed in the Junior Olympics three times and was due to start high school this year.
