Lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife branch, have lamented that the assassins of their colleague, Dr. Deji Adejobi, are yet to be arrested.
Adejobi, who was a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics, was reportedly trailed and shot dead by the assailants who invaded his residence close to the Tollgate area of Ile-Ife around 10pm on July 4.
The lecturers, who spoke through their Chairman, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, regretted that five weeks after the assassination of Adejobi, they had no clue of who the culprits were.
Aborisade, who described the incident as worrisome, insisted that the identity of the assassins was supposed to have been known by now.
The ASUU chairman said, “We have waited with bated breath for some time now with the hope that those who murdered Adejobi would have been unmasked and made to face the full wrath of the law. This optimism appears dashed as we have no clue in respect of the matter.
“ASUU-OAU testifies to Adejobi’s generally accommodating mien and ready disposition to helping people. To the best of our knowledge he was an easy-going scholar with a lot of promise as he carried himself with dignity. We are at a loss as to why anyone would consider him not worthy of living in his own country.”
He, however, called on government and security agencies in the state to ensure a proper investigation as a means of apprehending the killers .
“This crime should not be allowed to remain another mystery in the long list of similar grievous crimes against Nigerians. Criminals should not, for any reason, be allowed to enjoy a free reign in our country. We cannot remain aloof and allow the murderers of Dr. Adedeji Adejobi to go scot free.”
