Administrators seek global best practice in teachers’ employment
ADMINISTRATORS of schools have been urged to imbibe global best practice in employing teachers, adding that to get the best for our children, trained teachers and passionate graduates are those who can deliver qualitative education to students.
Proprietress, Kingsfield Schools, Ikorodu, Mrs Susan Iluno, while speaking to mark the school 10th Anniversary said:”Employing teachers to teach in schools goes beyond getting a graduate because it is not everyone who can impact knowledge to others. You need to be trained on the methodology of teaching which entails you doing it passionately. “
According to her, even when are to employ a trained teacher, you have to go for the round peg in the round hole. “Whatever the Education graduate majors in is what he should be given to teach, “ she said.
Iluno who cited an example of when she was about recruiting teachers to the school said: “Somebody me to employ anybody with religious knowledge, preferably a Pastor to teach Christian Religious Knowledge, CRK, but I objected. Because I know it is a different thing to have a knowledge of a subject and it is another thing entirely to be able to impact on people.”
ANNIVERSARY: From Left; Consultant Rev. Victor Akwuodike, Proprietress Mrs. Susan Iluno, the Principal Mr. Festus Mokwunye and Bursar Mr. Chike Iluno during the 10th Anniversary press briefing of Kingsfield College Ijede Ikorodu, in Lagos.
Having taught as a teacher in Lagos State for fifteen years before establishing Kingsfield Schools in 2006, she said, I prefer someone with Bachelor Education than a Bachelor in Sciences or Masters holder without education knowledge to teach in her school.
She said: “About 95 per cent of the teachers in Kingsfield Schools are graduates of Education. Those without education background, but have post graduate studies in education are also employed.
This, according to her, has made their students in the past 10 years performed excellently in WAEC, NECO and JAMB examinations.
“When I conceived the idea of establishing a school in 1986, I was a nurse. However, due to the passion I have to see children succeed, I went back to the University and study education. Today, I also have a masters degree in education.”
The Proprietress also frowned at schools where a teacher who was employed to teach a subject is eventually teaching four subjects, asking, “How do you expect such teacher to give their best to the students?”
She vowed to practice education the way it suppose to be, adding that she will put the right people in the place and also make the working place conducive for teaching and for learning. “I will fund education and make the students learn in the right conducive environment,” she added.
