The Director, Academic Planning at the Landmark University, Omu Aran, Kwara State, Prof. Raphael Olarinoye, has emphasised the need for on science and technology education.
Science and technology education, he said, was essential to addressing Nigeria’s development challenges.
He stated this while delivering the third public lecture of Landmark University. The lecture was entitled, ‘Science and technology education in agricultural revolution.’
Olarinoye, a former President, Curriculum Organisation of Nigeria and consultant to ECOWAS, called on the federal and state governments as well as private universities to invest more in science and technology education.
He stated that through science education, students could manipulate scientific knowledge to identify, develop and make use of their talents for the benefit of society.
Such an education, he added, could facilitate the production of material objects for the human sustenance and comfort.
He, however, said that technology education programmes in the country’s universities were mainly for the production of teachers.
Olarinoye, who is a Visiting Professor at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, said science education would boost agricultural revolution resulting in food security and production of export materials.
He added that it would boost industrialisation and employment generation.
