Varsities Talk: Messing up at LASU

L AGOS  State University, LASU, was conceived by the Governor Jakande government as a university which will not only provide university opportunities for Lagos State residents but for all Nigerians and which would quickly attain a national and global standard befitting Nigeria’s self-proclaimed Centre of Excellence. I recall reading our Daddy’s, late Chief Sanu Sobowale, 1931-1990, copy of the lengthy proposals concerning LASU, when he served as the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General for Lagos State. Furthermore, the education was going to be made affordable to ensure that nobody, brilliant, is denied the benefit of university for lack of funds. Those were lofty goals and to me, as an economist, the objectives were daunting. Prof Obafunwa Funds, which even in the early 1980s were more readily available, compared with the demands now placed on public finance, would always be a challenge to governments and to the university authorities. There was no question abou...

Excerpts: By Dayo Adesulu W HAT in your knowledge necessitates the perennial issues bedevilling LASU? When I assumed office as Vice Chancellor of LASU, I started by dealing with problems of backlog of certificates. I even had to sign certificates for people that had graduated in 1994. As at that time, we were not graduating students, there had not been convocation. But now we have had three consecutive graduations. There were no records, no database, so we had to ask students to register, that was how we established a database at the ICT center on campus. When I came in, the University was spending over N13 million monthly and I felt something was...

OSOPADEC students protest non-payment of allowances

Some beneficiaries of the Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission bursary scheme have protested against the alleged non-payment of their allowances. The students, who besieged the OSOPADEC Akure office with placards last Thursday, accused the OSOPADEC Chairman, Pastor Johnson Ogunyemi, of not respecting an earlier agreement the commission made with them. In a statement on Monday, the President, National Association of Ilaje Students, Mr. Victor Adeya, said the commission owed the students bursary allowances for the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic sessions. He also denied the accusation that students assaulted the police officers drafted to the scene to stop the protest. Adeya said, “The intervention of the officers and men of the State Police Command was not primarily intended to save the commission’s buildings and workers from the students. We had no weapons on us. We did not attack the police. The police officers that sustained injuries were those who jumped o...

Why private institutions can’t benefit from TETFUND —Bogoro

The Executive  Secretary  of Tertiary Education Trust Fund ,TETFUND, Professor Sulaiman Bogoro in this interview explains why TETFUND must be supported to addresses the fundamental challenges affecting the education sector and why private universities cant benefit from the Fund. Excerpts The nations that make up the first world are said to lay great emphasis on science and technology. Is it not advisable that TETFUND tows the line in funding science, vocational and technical institutions?( I think you heard what I said earlier today at the presentation of research grants funded by TETFUND. Most of the grants approved were for the sciences. Even in conventional universities 60:40 ratio is the standard while in the universities of technology it is 70:30. In these modern times, the economy must be driven by knowledge-based infrastructure largely dominated by science and technology. This should not be otherwise. If you look at the most advanced nations you will see that ...

NYSC shifts mobilisation dates for fresh corps members Ahead of the forthcoming general elections, the National Youth Service Corps on Monday said corps members would be mobilised in two batches this year. The service also shifted the date of mobilisation for Batch A from Tuesday May 5 to Tuesday May 26, 2015. The NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Bose Aderibigbe, stated this in an interview with our correspondent. She said, “Part of the reasons is because of the forthcoming general elections. You know corps members are participating in the elections. February 21 is when elections will be rounding off and Batch A that is supposed to pass out will still be in service to continue with the polls they have started.” Asked whether the postponement was because of fears of likely post-election violence, Aderibigbe answered in the negative. She said, “No, which post-election violence? Are we praying for that? It is not because of that; we have three batches alrea...
